Cloud is an impressive art sculpture in Heathrow's Terminal 5. Created by Troika this awe-inspiring installation really grabs your attention and its something that I could stare at for ages.Hanging over the escalators it is create by around 4,500 electronic discs that flip from a glossy side to a black matte side. This transition between the two sides is nearly instant and when combined between all the disks a beautiful abstract pattern is formed. It is inspired by the old fashioned information boards that you get at train stations and airports that flick around to reveal information. These disks have inspired me to use an object that is round and to include some abstract transitions in my work.
Nowadays the ticker boards from stations and airports are long gone and have been replaced with LED systems. Although the this may seem like a small technological advance the idea is exactly the same. Either a LED is on or off, much like the ticker, the rapid turning on and off of LEDs create scrolling marquees.
