D&AD : BBC iPlayer

The brief I have chosen to work on is the one for the BBC iPlayer. The brief requires a social side added to the BBC iPlayer without making it a social network and allow users through their interactions to engage in a greater variety of content.

"The BBC is the largest broadcasting corporation in the world. Its mission is to enrich people's lives with programmes that inform, educate and entertain. It is a public service broadcaster, established by a Royal Charter and funded by the licence fee that is paid by UK households

The BBC uses the income from the licence fee to provide services including 8 national TV channels plus regional programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and an extensive website bbc.co.uk

The BBC is governed by the BBC Trust, which represents the interest of licence fee payers and sets the overall strategy

BBC iPlayer is a free service that lets you catch up with TV and radio programmes from the past seven days that you may missed or want to watch again and currently has 5 million visitors per month." D&AD Brief

Launched fully on Christmas Day 2007 (there was an existing service running since October 2005) the BBC iPlayer has become one of the largest video on demand services in the UK. Initially when it was launched it was only available on the desktop computers, now it is on 15 devices ranging from the games consoles to mobile phones. What makes the iPlayer so special is if you can use a computer you can use it, its so simple to use. Just simply search for and select a programme from the past 7 days and it will play it for you. The content it provides ranges from cBeebies to BBC4 programmes so the website has a huge target audience, from CBBC to OAP. Whilst playing the programmes they also have the option for subtitles which opens up their content to the hard of hearing.

These statistics are staggering considering they are just for one month. Having over 70 million requests for content in one month is a phenomenal amount and shows just how popular this website is.

The layout of the website mainly consists of 4 columns which are very easy to navigate. The colour scheme is kept the same throughout using shades of dark grey and black for the background colours and the foreground colours mainly being made up of white and a dark pink. The background colours work well because when the audience are viewing the programmes there is less distraction and it frames the video better.
