D&AD : Incentive to play
At the Transmediale Art2.0 talk, the creator of Mechanical Turk, Aaron Koblin, spoke about Artificial Artificial Intelligence. This is where humans are given the job of a computer cant do as accurately, for example sorting through a list of auction listings making sure each one has an accurate description. To encourage people do to these tasks they are payed tiny around $0.02. The money is feeble but people still do these tasks. Some do it for fun others do it just for the money. Jamie Wilkinson from Know Your Meme also spoke about giving people an incentive to use features on the web. He spoke about a points based system which he uses to encourage people to use the site.
Yahoo Answers is a website that is growing in popularity. On this website you can submit and answer other user submitted questions. To encourage people to use this users are awarded 10 points for answering questions. Once the user has 250 points they unlock level 2. At level 2 users can then rate other users answers and questions. So in reward for answering 25 questions the user is rewarded with not a feature that is not all that. But people still use it and 'play' for points. Points can also be deducted for asking questions and for having poorly rated answers.
Here is my points board for Yahoo Answers.
Both of these examples have lead me to the conclusion that to encourage people to use my feature of the iPlayer Party I will reward them with a points system where they can unlock bonus footage or something similar.
