Existing Interactivity : Educational Installations

Educational Multi-touch Wall

This educational multi-touch wall is installed at Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.
The wall is a very impressive display of how interactivity can be used within education.
The wall consists of a 2m glass panel which is filled with infra-red light, when the user touches the glass they interrupt the infra-red light and is picked up by an infra-red camera and is processed by software.
The idea of the installation is to make users more aware of the plight of the Table Mountain Ghost Frog and by making it interactive they are engaging the user much more than if the user was just reading a plaque on a wall.
Not only is this is a very clever idea, I think it is executed very well, the GUI is very nice to look at and is big and bold so users of all ages can use it and with the use of videos and large images they really captivate the user.

Living Galapagos :

http://www.livinggalapagos.org/
Living Galapagos is a website that is aimed at educating the audience about the life of the Galapagos Islands. The website consists of an interactive map that has pins in it. When you hover over the pins with a mouse information is displayed, that information could be a picture of a video. When the pin is clicked it takes you to a separate part of the website where more details about the information in the hover-over is displayed. The hover-over is displayed in such a way that it only shows you have the image so you are more intrigued to click it to find out what the rest of the image is. What strikes me about this website is the style it has used. It has an old fashioned looking map along with a tag you would associated with travel. I think the colors used on this site are very good, they have a rustic washed out effect that works very well. Although this isnt as interactive as the Two Oceans interactive wall, it still works well in educating people because its very easy to just click through and find out the facts without even realizing your doing it.
