Existing Interactivity : Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (sometimes abbreviated to AR) is a relatively new invention and is the process of overlaying computer generated imagery over a 'real life' image. This example I experienced in the LEGO store in Brighton. What happens is that you take a box of lego up to the camera (located above the screen in this photo) and then it displays the completed model on-top of the box. Now im not easily impressed by new technologies but this was executed so well it was very hard to ignore. The lego model even rotates and scales when you move the box around, the image is also animated so the LEGO mini-figs walk around and the vehicles move within the scene all while you appear to be holding it. This is not only a good example of new technologies but it is also a great way to get people into the LEGO store (I have recommended it to everyone I talk to when they say they are going to Brighton.)

Nearest Tube - iPhone App.

This new application for the iPhone 3GS uses augmented reality to located tube stations. Using a combination of the iPhones compass and GPS tools it can located you and the orientation of your phone and it overlays the correct directions and arrows. My phone is compatible with this application so I am yet to experience it but I can see from the videos that this is an incredibly useful tool, it takes away to inconvenience of trying to read a tiny map on the phone so anybody can use it, all you need to do is point it in the right direction.
